Life On Mars?
The discovery of a large ice cap is a great sign for NASA scientists who are a part of the Mars Exploration Program as water is usually correlated with life. In the Newsela article (https://newsela.com/read/mars-ice-cap-water/id/45000/) they mention how this large ice cap could resemble similar ones on earth, “The detection of a long-standing reservoir of liquid water is thrilling evidence of an idea that first began to be debated three decades ago: that there could be water at the base of Mars' ice caps, similar to what's present on Earth.” Coming from this new information is a wave of questions surrounding the topic of martians. Since these ice caps are similar to the ones on earth, many seem to believe that life could be frozen under the caps or have previously used this water to survive. There is no clear evidence of Martians for the time being, but also none to disprove the possibility.
Another question that arose from this discovery was what this means for the Mars Exploration Program. Clearly this is a big step in the right direction. One of the program’s core steps in order to achieve colonization is seeing if the planet is able to support human life. If more water is found under the surface, this will surely help the program in reaching their end goal. Do you believe that there could be martians that once inhabited this planet? What is your opinion on the colonization of Mars, should we continue or is it not worth it?
Great post Kate! I think that the colonization of Mars would be revolutionary in the world, and with our planet’s condition deterioting rapidly every day, it could be a viable option. I also can see that this would be a very expensive program for NASA and other similar organizations and could also create conflict as to who gets what land on Mars. Overall, I do feel that it would be worth it to colonize Mars because it would teach us a lot about different planets and also be an escape from the effects of climate change.
